Biomedical Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary and upcoming field of technology. Being an integrating medium for two dynamic professions, Medicine and Engineering, this discipline has the broad objective of assisting in the struggle against illness and disease by providing tools and techniques for research, diagnosis and treatment.
The School of Biomedical Engineering was established by the UGC during the Fifth Five Year Plan in the year 1978. Banaras Hindu University is fortunate in having both the Institute of Technology and Institute of Medical Sciences in the same campus. This results in excellent collaborative work related to Biomedical Engineering. The infrastructure development work of the School was started in 1985 with the appointment of core faculty members. The School is offering 2 years M. tech. Course in Biomedical Engineering with annual intake of 5 students per year. The School is having Ph.D. Programme in the area of Biomedical Engineering. With the financial assistance received from various funding agencies like M.H.R.D., D.A.E.,etc., the School has developed well-equipped Computer Lab., Bio-electronics Lab., Polymer Lab. and Bioceramics Lab. Recently school received financial assistance from DST under FIST Programme for the improvement of teaching and networking facility.
