In view of the national importance of this highly interdisciplinary subject and the availability of well developed facilities in Engineering and Biological Sciences within the University, UGC established this School as a part of the Institute of Technology during the Fifth Five Year Plan. The main objectives of the school were to organize R&D activities in the fields of Biochemical Engineering and to offer courses in various departments of the Institute. Regular M.Tech. courses were started in the School with an intake of five students from the academic session 1986-1987. Some related areas of Biochemical are also being taught at B.Tech. and M.Tech. levels as elective subjects to the students of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Institute of Technology. The Faculty of the School has been actively associated with the M.Sc. (Biotechnology) programme of the University right since its inception. They have been sharing about 1/3rd of the teaching load in the final year of the M.Sc. (Biotechnology) students of the School of Biotechnology.
