Free Boundary Problems

Heat and Mass transfer phenomena accompanying the phase change are of technical interest. A characteristic of heat transfer problems dealing with phase change is the existence of an interface separating the phases on this interface, the latent heat associated with the phase change is absorbed or liberated, and as a consequence of heat transfer process in the two phases, the location of the interface continuously changes with time. These problems belong to a more general class of problems, commonly known as free boundary value problems. Exact solutions of these types of problems are very limited and are restricted for only the simplest of geometrical configurations and boundary conditions. In any realistic problem the resort must be made to numerical techniques. The choice of the method is influenced.
