The Department was established in year 1985 and it comprises of highly qualified, trained and dedicated faculty. The prime responsibility of the Department is to organize the teaching of Applied Chemistry programmes and provide excellent research facilities in the thrust areas of Applied Chemistry and related Engineering disciplines.

The well established Research groups led by the faculty members, offer research facilities in the areas of Chemical sensors with major emphasis on commercial development of electrochemical biosensors/sensors, Organically modified silicate based nanomaterials and nanocomposite  Water Pollution Control, Hydrometallurgy, Tribology and E P lubricant additive development, Corrosion-inhibition of metals and alloys, Synthetic heterocyclic chemistry, Computer-aided chemistry problem solutions, Coordination Chemistry and Bioinorganic Chemistry. The faculty has guided about 50 Ph.D.’s and published over 500 research papers in leading International and National Journals.

The Departmental research has been supported by DST, DOEnv., MHRD, CSIR, UGC and AICTE. The Department has also been able to establish major research laboratories on Electrochemical biosensors development, Water Pollution control laboratory and Centre for Tribology laboratory.
